Ideology

At Writers Ink we value the oral traditions of storytelling because each student needs to hear stories, tell stories and of course, read stories. We can enrich student’s imaginations by offering  a fun environment to read, re-tell, adapt and write stories for pleasure, for a friend and for a wider audience.

Many young poeple develop as readers when they discover a writer who captures their imagination, however for some, the translation from reading to writing can be a difficult journey. At Writers Inked, we weave our drama, storytelling and writing classes together so that the children have opportunities to ‘Talk for writing’ and they orally rehearse all of the stories that they will later come to write.

Writers Inked consider it is important for our students to read memorable books which contain wonderful language which leave an indelible impression on their imaginations.  Many of the playground games that are enjoyed are their first steps through storytelling, their songs are often adapted from stories, rhymes and tales they have heard.

When parents enjoy books with their children the art of storytelling is shared at bedtime however Writers Inked encourages children to enjoy the magic they weave as storytellers and hold on to it and add elements of acting and performance. These creative and imaginative experiences ensure each storyteller develops and matures as a confident writer.
